Star Trek: Picard
Seven of Nine - Fenris Ranger
Reinventing a fan favorite character through costume.
From Borg Babe to Badass…
Overview-
When fans think of Seven of Nine (Seven), the first image that comes to mind is that of her infamous catsuit. It was the task of the design team to rebrand Seven to more accurately represent her character’s development since we last saw her in Voyager.
We decided that it was time for her to trade in her jumpsuit for a classic leather jacket, utility belt, and boots to transform her from being a character suited primarily for the male gaze into a rounded out, feminine icon and heroine.
MISSION
Design a new look for Seven of Nine in her reprisal role as Seven in Picard.
CLIENT
Paramount Plus- Picard Season 2
ROLE
End-to-end senior Costumer responsible for seeing designs through from conception to camera. Worked with Costume Designer (vision), Fabric Purchaser (material sourcing), and Manufacturing Foreperson (sampling & fabrication).
TIMELINE
March 2020-July 2021
Step One: Define
Our first step was to establish our objectives and align them with the studio, director, and our departments design goals.
Upon receiving this project, I provided our team with & oversaw the following roadmap to achieving our goals:
Canon Research
To move forward, we had to first look back at all of the Seven of Nine costumes from previous Star Trek series to refamiliarize ourselves with her aesthetic and begin brainstorming how we could tie in past characteristics with our new design.
Fashion Research
Next, we explored modern and historical fashion inspiration to find reference images to provide our illustrator with so he could create costume concept art.
Fittings & Final Touches
Lastly, we conducted fittings with our cast for final studio approval before going to camera.
Material Sampling & Prototyping
Once the design had been approved by the studio and executive team, our fabricators and shoppers were tasked with creating material samples.
Step Two: Research
I conducted a broad scope of research to help our team understand Sevens character and the context in which she exists in this story as well as within the Star Trek universe.
Canon Research
Her most iconic look from Voyager was this silver jumpsuit, designed by Robert Blackman. The actress found it to be uncomfortable and movement restrictive.
The key features of this design that we wanted to touch upon in our updated design included the molded shoulders, and architectural seaming details.
We decided to stay away from repeating the silhouette, and color palettte.
Fashion Research
We know we wanted this look to make her look tough, action-ready, and slightly rugged, while still allowing for femininity and softness. To achieve this, we decided to layer a soft and textured sweater under a sculptural and forbidding leather jacket, hinting that our character has some tenderness under a tough exoskeleton.
We decided to pair this top half with a pair of snug, but still practical, multi-material pants and some kick-ass, well worn, knee high boots.
I also looked at leather and cording manipulation that would allow us to indicate a spine down the back of the jacket.
When looking at modern fashion research, I prioritized the works of sculptural l designers like Georgia Hardinge to provide us with inspiration for fabric manipulation that could emulate the kind of exoskeleton effect we wanted to achieve.
Most of the references I found that had details I thought could be helpful in creating an illustration from came from gothic and post-apocalyptic inspired fashion lines. Though I knew that wasn’t the look we were going for, elements of those designs would be helpful in informing our own aesthetic.
Step Three: Analyze
I compiled our most inspiring research into design presentation boards that we used to take the director and studio executives on our characters costume journey.
Step Four: Design
I oversaw the creation of design ideas through the form of illustrations by interfacing with the costume designer to provide roadmaps for our illustrators to built concept art based off of.
Final Costume
After several round of prototyping and fittings with cast, the final costume was approved by production and premiered in the first episode of Picard, Season 2.
